What is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental procedure that is performed to remove teeth stains caused due to coffee, tea or tobacco. Unlike the domestic teeth whitening procedures that use a very mild formula of bleaching agents, professional teeth whitening is performed by using very potent but safe whitening chemicals that produce prompt and visible teeth whitening effects.

How Teeth Whitening Works?

During teeth whitening a bleaching agent, usually carbamide peroxide is applied over the exposed surfaces of the teeth. The bleaching agent rapidly disintegrates when exposed to a visible or laser light source and release peroxide molecules. These peroxide molecules are able to penetrate inside the enamel layer of the teeth and dissolve teeth stains.

Who can benefit from Professional Teeth Whitening?

You can get a beautiful smile with teeth whitening, if you have any of the following dental problems:

  • Coffee and Tea stains
  • Stains due to tobacco chewing or smoking
  • Teeth stains caused due to developmental problems of enamel or dentine

It must be noted here that teeth stains that resulted during tooth development cannot be removed through teeth whitening, such as those caused due tetracycline administration and dental fluorosis.

How is Teeth Whitening Performed?

For best results, teeth whitening is carried out in multiple steps and sittings. A routine in-office teeth whitening procedure involves the following steps:

  • Fabrication of Teeth Whitening Trays – to start with, your dentist will make an impression of your teeth which will be sent to the dental laboratory, that will be used for fabricating the whitening trays which will be used during the teeth whitening procedure.
  • Teeth Cleaning – before starting the whitening procedure, your dentist will first perform a thorough cleaning of your teeth to make sure that all the teeth surfaces are cleaned equally.
  • Gum Protection – in order to prevent accidental damage or bleaching of the gums, your dentist will apply a protective agent such as coco butter over your gums before teeth whitening.
  • Application of the Bleaching Agent – afterwards, your dentist will apply the whitening gel evenly over all the outer surfaces of your teeth. Activation of the bleaching agent is carried out by exposing it to a visible light source, which initiates a chemical reaction that results in the dissolution of teeth stains. After about 30 minutes, the bleaching agent is washed away with water.
  • Assessing the Results – after teeth whitening has been performed, your dentist will ascertain if a single sitting is enough or whether another teeth whitening appointment may be required.

Are the Effects of Teeth Whitening Permanent?

No matter how much sparkling white teeth you may get after teeth whitening, their whitening effect is bound to get reduced over the period of time. Regular oral hygiene maintenance can significantly reduce the frequency with which you may need to visit your cosmetic dentist for teeth whitening.

Will Teeth Whitening Also Work on My Crowns and Bridges?

The bleaching agent used in teeth whitening is only effective on natural teeth, and does not produce any effect over the artificial teeth. Therefore, if you have stained prostheses, you may need to get them repaired or replaced following a teeth whitening procedure, so as to match their color with your natural teeth.
